What is anodizing?

 

Anodizing is an electrochemical process used to "grow" a stable oxide film on the surface of a metal. As described by "anodizing" itself, the metal to be formed must participate in the electrochemical reaction as the anode, and the reaction requires a suitable electrolyte and another cathode material. Since the oxide layer of aluminum alloy is formed by the reaction of the base metal, the oxide layer will not peel or flake off. Aluminum and aluminum alloys are the metals that are most commonly anodized. Other metals that can be anodized include: magnesium, zinc, zirconium, titanium, niobium, etc. Anodizing is not suitable for ferrous metals (such as carbon steel) because iron oxide (rust, including FeO and Fe2O3) is not dense and is very loosely connected to the base, and cannot play a role in overall passivation.

For pure aluminum and aluminum alloys, the direct effect of anodizing is to increase the thickness of the natural oxide film on their surface.

Its main effects are:

  1. Improving the wear resistance of aluminum alloys. Aluminum oxide has a very high hardness. On the Mohr hardness scale, the hardness of aluminum oxide (corundum) reaches 9, second only to diamond [1]. As the thickness of the aluminum oxide film increases, the overall wear resistance of the part is also significantly improved;
  2. The increase in the thickness of the oxide film is conducive to improving the corrosion resistance of aluminum alloys. The thickness of the natural oxide film on the surface of aluminum alloy is about 25-30μm [2]. It has a good passivation effect in ordinary atmospheric environment, but it is not enough to protect the aluminum matrix under more severe conditions. The thickened oxide film can better isolate the base metal and enhance the ability to resist pitting corrosion;
  3. The aluminum oxide film itself is transparent and can make the metal surface shiny. The thickened oxide film can make the parts look more beautiful. Parts with porous oxide films can be further improved by coloring;
  4. Anodized parts can have good insulation.
