Introduction to 6061 aluminum coil

 

6061 aluminum coil is an Al-Mg-Si series heat-treatable and strengthened aluminum alloy (national standard GB/T 3190, American standard ASTM B209), containing 1.0% Mg, 0.6% Si and 0.28% Cu, with **high strength** (T6 state tensile strength ≥310MPa) and **excellent comprehensive performance**. Through solid solution aging treatment, hardness HV≥95 can be achieved, and it has good corrosion resistance, weldability and processability (bending/stamping). The surface can be anodized or sprayed, and is widely used in aerospace structural parts, automobile body panels, precision mechanical parts and high-end building curtain walls. It is a representative material of industrial-grade high-strength aluminum alloy.

(Note: Compared with 5A05 aluminum coil, 6061 has higher strength but slightly weaker seawater corrosion resistance, suitable for different working conditions.)

Processing methods and technical points of 6061 aluminum coils

 

1. Cutting

- Laser cutting: suitable for high-precision contour processing, smooth cuts without burrs, and tolerances can be controlled within ±0.1mm.

- Water jet cutting: no heat-affected zone, suitable for thick plate (≤150mm) processing, keeping the mechanical properties of the material unchanged.

- CNC shearing machine: economical and efficient straight-line cutting solution, suitable for mass production.

 

2. Forming

- Cold rolling bending: the minimum bending radius can reach 1.5 times the plate thickness (T4 state), and it is necessary to pay attention to the bending direction being perpendicular to the rolling direction to avoid cracks.

- Stamping stretching: O-state material elongation ≥12%, suitable for deep drawing processing; T6 state needs to be preheated to 150-200℃ to improve plasticity.

 

3. Connection process

- TIG/MIG welding: 4043 or 5356 welding wire is recommended, and aging treatment (such as T6 re-aging) is required after welding to restore strength.

- Riveting/bolting: Suitable for non-weldable T6 high-strength parts, and the contact surface needs to be anodized to prevent galvanic corrosion.

 

4. Surface treatment

- Anodizing: It can generate 5-25μm oxide film with hardness HV800-1000, which improves wear resistance and corrosion resistance.

- Sandblasting: Sa2.5 cleanliness, enhances coating adhesion.

 

Notes:

- After heat treatment (T6) processing, residual stress needs to be eliminated by stress relief annealing (200℃×2h);

- The processing tool is recommended to be made of cemented carbide or PCD material, and the cutting speed is recommended to be 200-300m/min.

(Compared with 5A05 aluminum coil, 6061 focuses more on strength and precision processing, while 5A05 is dominated by corrosion resistance)

Mainstream packaging methods for aluminum coils

 

Vertical packaging

Features: The coil core is placed vertically and needs to be fixed with a special wooden bracket or metal frame to avoid collapse and edge damage.

Applicable scenarios: long-distance transportation (especially sea transportation), high-precision aluminum coils (such as color-coated coils).

Cost: 15%~20% higher than horizontal packaging (due to complex loading and unloading), but the breakage rate is significantly reduced.

 

Horizontal packaging

Features: The coil core is placed horizontally, wrapped with moisture-proof paper + iron sheet for bundling, and the inner diameter is usually 508mm/610mm; optional iron sleeve for collapse prevention (extra charge)

Applicable scenarios: short-distance transportation, low-risk scenarios.

 

Quotation Rules

 

Our aluminum coil quotation mainly consists of two parts: the aluminum ingot price of the day + processing fee.

Raw material price fluctuations: Aluminum prices fluctuate with the global metal market. The aluminum price of the London Metal Exchange (LME) is the basic reference. The quotation is usually based on the LME aluminum price of the day or the agreed price plus the processing fee.

Processing fee: The processing fee covers all costs in the process of converting aluminum ingots to aluminum coils, including smelting, casting, rolling, shearing and other processes. The processing fee will vary depending on the processing difficulty and precision requirements.
